School Improvement Plan

From the Desk of Mr. Tony Overstreet, SCHS Principal

Over the past year much has been said about No Child Left Behind, the Gerogia Common Core Standards, and of course the favorite term of all students, teachers and parents, "AYP". At Social Circle we are proud of the fact that we have made Adequate Yearly Progress for another year. As we move into the second semester of this year we must remain diligent in our efforts to be successful. Many changes are coming our way through Race To The Top, and other reform efforts from both the national and state level. As a school we must be out front in our efforts to improve student performance. In 1999, Dr. Allene Magill, then superintendent of the Forsythe County Schools stated, "Public schools are doing the best job they have ever done. But what they have always done and how we have always prepared students will not suffice for the twenty-first century and beyond." We want to make sure that Social Circle students are prepared for the twenty-first century.

Dr. Theodore Sizer, former Dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Education formed an organization called the Coalition of Essential Schools. According to Sizer successful schools are guided by Ten Principles:

Schools should focus on helping adolescents learn to use their minds well.
The school's goal should be simple: each student should master a number of essential skills and areas of knowledge.
The school's goals should apply to all students.
Teaching and learning should be personalized.
The governing practical metaphor of the school should be student as a worker rather than teacher as deliverer of instructional services.
The diploma should be awarded upon a successful final demonstration of mastery.
the tone of the school should explicitly and self consciously stress values of unanxious expectation (I won't threaten you but I expect much of you), of trust and of decency (the values of fairness, generosity and tolerance).
The principal and teachers should perceive themselves as generalists first. Staff should expect multiple obligations and a sense of commitment to the entire school.
Collective planning by teachers.
The school should honor diversity and build on the strength of its communities.

Teachers in Coalition schools do not merely deliver information; they design assignments that require students to hone their skills of research, assessment, creation, and collaboration. Mastery projects, research papers, and presentations are used by the student to present evidence of real learning which is much more convincing than responding to a multiple choice quiz.

Twelve years ago Dr. Sizer spoke of a classroom that sounds much like the classroom of the near future in Georgia. I promise you that we will be "on the cutting edge" at SCHS. I invite you to join with us as we navigate the changing waters of school reform in Social Circle, Georgia and the nation.
